White Paper and Resource Guide for M.S. Capstone Project

Picture

Executive Summary

The lack of diversity in several newsrooms came under more scrutiny during the pandemic and highlighted the imbalanced coverage of several racial issues such as the BLM Movement, Asian Hate Crimes, etc. This has prompted audiences to question the credibility of professional journalism and how it affects its ability to accurately and fairly represent societies.

This project examines the news industry's challenges in attracting and retaining diverse candidates in newsrooms across the country. It will analyze how diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives have shaped editorial decisions to make a larger impact within their community instead of focusing solely on fact-based reporting. This research will serve as a resource guide for newsrooms to use when hiring diverse journalists leading to accurate and unbiased news coverage and retention longevity.
